Companies join forces to enable the SONiC system on WNC’s state-of-the-art 400Gbps 12.8Tbps solution. This enables a disaggregated networking option for datacenter operators without the high costs associated with commercial systems.
Rosh Ayin, Israel November 10, 2021 – Larch Networks, a company that provides solutions for telecom and datacenter operators, today announced a partnership with Wistron NeWeb Corporation (WNC), a leading communications solutions provider based in Taiwan, to bring open source SONiC software to commercially available Marvell® Prestera® CX 8580 based devices.
As a systems engineering, implementation and deployment company of 12 years standing, Larch Networks creates state-of-the-art, customized embedded network equipment solutions. Larch Networks had developed a new SAI (switch abstraction interface) layer for Microsoft’s SONiC Network Operating System – an emerging standard in data center networking, as well as a base software package for WNC’s state of the art 400 Gbps 32 QSFP-DD port Marvell Prestera CX 8580 platform-based switch – all in a dense 1U rack solution. With support of configurable port breakout this can be easily expanded to 64 ports, capable of 100 or 200 Gbps speeds in the same 1U rack space.
Larch Networks aims to satisfy the need for a growing variety of integration use cases. More and more companies are in need of high-speed, high-density systems that utilize higher and higher-speed Ethernet networks to add value to services like blade high performance, AI processing, data delivery, reliable and fast Ethernet-based Flash storage designs for a broad spectrum of market use cases.
“WNC’s 400 Gbps switch will enable new, previously impossible, scenarios in leaf and spine architecture, as well as in high-speed telecommunications. Customers today need more and more bandwidth with a smaller and smaller footprint. We give them this choice by eliminating monolithic, proprietary networking stacks through hardware and software disaggregation. We provide to the customer the ability to build the network they need today, with the agility and flexibility to go wherever tomorrow leads them” said Alexander Cheskis, co-founder and CEO at Larch Networks. “We are now able to lower barriers to entry for disaggregated networking and match customer requirements whether they are data centers with high-speed communications, or telecom networks”.
“We are excited to be working with Larch Networks to bring disaggregated networking solutions that allow for customization with standard software and hardware options at a lower cost to their worldwide customer base,” said Larry Lee, EVP and GM of the Networking BG at WNC. “With SONiC, our customers can simplify their options for network development and accelerate their development of disaggregated networks for today and for the future.”
Microsoft SONiC – Software for Open Networking in the Cloud (SONiC), is a breakthrough for network switch operations and management that Microsoft open-sourced to the community. SONiC is a uniquely extensible platform, with a large and growing ecosystem of hardware and software partners, that offers multiple switching platforms and software components.
Based on Debian Linux, SONiC allows standard Linux utilities to run on top of it. And as the first NOS to leverage containers as an integral part of the software stack, it supports the ability to deploy complex applications with minimal disruption to other applications running on the switch. Underpinning SONiC is its use of a switch abstraction interface (SAI) to mitigate hardware-based dependencies, maintaining a level of openness down to the ASIC on a physical switch.
